Grace Jones (1948–present)
“It girl” reign: 1970s-1990s
Grace Jones was a successful singer and actress who may be considered the first “It girl” ever. Like many “It girls,” she began her career as a model. She had a striking appearance, born in Jamaica and raised in Syracuse, New York, she had lush, full lips and cheekbones that were so sharp they looked like they could cut glass. This captured the attention of Helmut Newton and Yves Saint Laurent, and after becoming a successful model, Jones released a few albums in the late 1970s. It was actually her performance-art-like shows that captured the attention of her audience, and she’s been around so long that she’s dubbed the longest reigning “It girl.” In the 80s and 90s, Jones went on to star in films alongside Halle Berry, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Christopher Walken.
